The
Unbroken project was based off of the book unbroken as well as results from a test
that indicated which learning style we were. When I took the test I found that
I was a linguistic learner which has to do with English and language and also
bodily kinesthetic which was more about physical learning. We were also grouped
by what learning style we received. In my case there was only one other person
who was solely linguistic and I ended up working with her.
Being labeled as linguistic we were
supposed to do a project that had a lot to do with writing but also pictures
and images and chose to do a scrapbook of Louie Zamperini’s life before, after,
and during war through his mother’s eyes. The reason I choose to put this
particular project in my portfolio is because I put a lot of time and effort
into it and it is really a project that I feel proud of, not only that but it
taught me about group dynamics and dealing with people who you feel don’t do
their share of work.
The
scrapbook of Louie Zamperini’s life took a long time to finish, each page had
to be decorated to match the picture, designed, and then written. On each page
there was a combination of pictures and writing all from the perspective of a
mother keeping a scrapbook of her beloved son. I choose some of the most
important days through his life from his birth to his draft until his marriage,
the scrapbook ended when his mother died of cancer shortly after he was
married. All of the pictures that I used came straight from the book besides
his baby picture and all of the writing was based on facts from the book. I
also included faux letters one from the United States selective service and
others from his family. The one from the U.S.S.S was written in a typewriter
like font and was based on some draft letters that I read. The time and effort
it took me to get the project done was worth it as we ended up getting 100% on
the project.
The only issue I had with the
project was working with my partner. While most of this had to be done at home
we did have class time to work on it. During class time she consistently was
not focused and chatted with and distracted other classmates. She never reached
out to do any work at home either. Although there was only one scrapbook I
asked her to choose pages she wanted to do so I could give her the same size
paper and she never did, I also asked her to create a few letters to coincide
with the pages, however she did not give them to me until five minutes before
we had to turn it in, by then I had already done the letters myself and I had
to attach hers to the back flaps. The letters were her only contribution to the
entire project and it bothered me to the point where I contemplated not putting
her name on the project. Even worse she did not know what was in the project so
as we were presenting she had to quickly skim each page to know what to talk
about.
Even through the group struggles
this is one of favorite projects and one I am most proud of because of the
effort I put into and how I overcame the difficulties I had with my partner.
