Critical Thinking paper

The critical thinking paper was the major writing assignment of freshmen year. I decided to write my paper on the controversial Stand Your Ground laws were enacted in Florida as well as 23 other states. I chose this topic because recently there have been some controversial cases of it especially in Florida. I wanted to learn more about these cases and that led me to want to research and write about it. I wanted to include this paper in my portfolio is because I fell as if it is the best paper I have written so far in CAP. It culminates the research and writing skills that I have learned this year well and shows the work I put into being a better writer.

The process of writing the critical thinking paper started with researching the Stand Your Ground law. One of the challenges I faced with this topic was because it was just enacted in 2005 there weren’t many books solely about it. I was able to find many newspaper and magazine articles about the law mostly about the Trayvonn Martin case. To me learning about all the cases of Stand Your ground across the United States was the most important and interesting part of the whole research portion. The different cases of young men and women who were victimized by this law and often killed added an emotional element that made it interesting to research and more interesting to read.
One of the other major issues that I had while writing this was that when I sat in front of the computer and tried to write I was struggling to come up with ideas and pinpoint what I wanted to say. To fix this I decided to hand-write the entire essay which made it a lot easier to write but also frustrating because I was handwriting it and then typing it again. However; this did give me a chance to re-read my paper and edit it as I was re-typing, which was really helpful. I am happy with the way that I edited this paper because I read it through thoroughly three times before turning in the rough draft. I am really proud of this paper but if I had to do it again I would fix some of the places where I used passive voice and answer the questions that were one my final draft.
